Youth Council leads protest in FUOYE, defies SUG warning

By Boye Oyeyemi –

Activities at the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) were disrupted on Monday as members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Ekiti State Chapter, alongside the Association of Southern Nigeria Youth Congress (ASNYC), staged a protest on campus.

The protesters demanded the suspension of Vice Chancellor Prof Abayomi Sunday Fasina and the removal of the Governing Council Chairman Senator Victor Ndoma Egba (SAN), carrying placards that read “Enough of corruption in FUOYE” and “Tinubu, suspend FUOYE VC now.”

NYCN Chairman James Bankole described the situation as a “monumental crisis threatening to destroy FUOYE”, accusing the university leadership of corruption, financial recklessness, and moral decay.

The demonstration was held despite warnings from the Students’ Union Government, which had earlier cautioned the groups against disrupting academic activities or holding unauthorised gatherings on campus.

Bankole alleged that the Council Chairman relocated all meetings and the ongoing Vice Chancellorship selection process to Abuja in defiance of ministerial directives, describing it as “financial sabotage against the Nigerian state.” He also accused the university of “institutionalising sexual exploitation and abuse”.

The NYCN and ASNYC declared that they would remain on campus until their demands, including a forensic audit of FUOYE finances and an independent probe into alleged sexual harassment cases, are met.

As of press time, neither the university authorities nor the Governing Council had issued any response. Attempts to reach the Special Adviser on Media to the Vice Chancellor, Dr Wole Balogun, were unsuccessful.
