2027: Nigeria must shift from consumption to production, Obi says

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said Nigeria must urgently shift from a consumption-driven economy to one centred on production, warning that the country cannot import its way to prosperity.
Obi spoke on Friday in Onitsha, Anambra State, while addressing journalists at a press conference on his plans and priorities ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He said his campaign would go beyond the pursuit of votes, describing it as an opportunity for Nigerians to engage in a national conversation on how to rebuild the country and improve living standards.
According to him, although he and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have different backgrounds and experiences, they share a common objective of improving the lives of Nigerians, particularly the poor and vulnerable.
“Our experiences differ, but our conclusion is clear: Nigeria must invest in its people and manage our public resources responsibly,” Obi said.
He said the country needed to move beyond reactive reforms and focus on whether government policies were actually improving the lives of citizens.
“The real questions are: Are Nigerians better off than they were four years ago? Can they afford food, education, and healthcare? Can businesses grow, produce, and generate jobs? Can young people secure productive employment? Can farmers work safely and get their produce to market?” he asked.
Obi said Nigeria’s population of more than 200 million and its large domestic market offered an opportunity for economic transformation if properly harnessed.
