A 300-level medical student of the University of Ibadan has passed away after allegedly consuming a bottle of sniper insecticide on Sunday night.
The student, whose identity has not been disclosed, was found unconscious on the ground floor of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall by a fellow student.
Reliable sources revealed that the student was foaming at the mouth and appeared disoriented when discovered.
According to reports, the deceased reportedly admitted to ingesting a substance identified as sniper, a commonly used insecticide, shortly before losing consciousness.
Upon this discovery, his roommates immediately alerted hall authorities, who arranged for his transportation via the Students’ Union bus to Jaja Clinic on campus. At the clinic, he was stabilised with oxygen and intravenous fluids before being referred to the emergency unit of the University College Hospital, where he eventually died.
The UCH Public Relations Officer, Funmi Adetuyibi, confirmed the development on Monday.
It was reported that the deceased’s parents, who live in Akure, Ondo State, were contacted and arrived at the hospital prior his passing. Although the parents raised concerns about possible poisoning, however, the deceased’s roommates maintained that he had admitted to ingesting the substance.
The roommates further disclosed that the student had recently become withdrawn, seldom attended classes, and had been avoiding calls from his family. The incident has reignited concerns about students’ mental health and emotional well-being on campuses.
