5 arrested, 11,297 Tramadol capsules seized in Benin drug raid

A joint operation by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigerian Army has led to the arrest of five suspects and the seizure of 11,297 tramadol capsules in Benin.
This was disclosed during a press briefing on Tuesday by the Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, Dr Mitchell Ofoyeju.
He stated that the capsules were recovered from a patent medicine shop and a supermarket on Monday in Benin City. The operation forms part of an intensified effort to curb illicit drug trafficking and abuse in the state.
“The operations, carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, resulted in the arrest of a patent medicine vendor, a supermarket owner, and three other suspects, along with the seizure of large quantities of controlled substances,” Dr Ofoyeju explained.
“The arrested suspects include a 46-year-old patent medicine vendor, a 25-year-old supermarket owner, and three others aged between 23 and 39 years.”
He also warned against targeting youths with illicit drugs, describing it as “an attack on the future of the nation,” and urged members of the public to provide credible information to the agency, assuring that all tips would be treated with strict confidentiality.
Among the items recovered were 11,297 capsules of tramadol, 400 tablets of diazepam, 108 tablets of Swinol, 22 tablets of Danabol (also known as ‘Molly’), 3.685kg of a substance suspected to be cannabis, 181 grammes of Loud, seven grammes of methamphetamine, and 10 bottles of codeine cough syrup.
