FG urges BRICS to rewrite global governance, financial rules

The federal government has urged BRICS countries to push for an urgent overhaul of global governance structures and the international financial system to make them more representative, equitable and responsive to contemporary realities.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made the call on Sunday while addressing the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India, through Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented him at the summit.

Tinubu said Nigeria supported reforms that would give developing countries a stronger voice in global decision-making, including reform of the United Nations Security Council and international financial institutions.

He said BRICS had strengthened the voice of the Global South and provided an avenue for countries to promote a more inclusive international order.

“Nigeria supports a more representative, equitable and responsive global governance architecture, including reform of the United Nations Security Council and the international financial system,” he said.

The President called for a BRICS partnership focused on practical outcomes, urging member and partner countries to move from dialogue and commitments to implementation and measurable development.

He also positioned Nigeria as a major investment destination and gateway to the African market, urging investors to take advantage of opportunities created by the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Tinubu said Nigeria’s economic resilience strategy was aimed at building an economy capable of withstanding global shocks while creating sustainable opportunities for citizens.
