The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for plans to construct a modern mini stadium in Gwagwalada, describing the project as a boost to grassroots sports development in the territory.
Olopade said the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly the Federal Government’s efforts to expand and upgrade sports infrastructure across the country.
According to him, the proposed facility will serve as one of the venues for the 2027 African School Games in Abuja while providing young athletes in the FCT with access to modern training facilities.
Highlighting ongoing infrastructure development in the sports sector, the NSC boss disclosed that more than 30 contractors had been deployed to various project sites nationwide to upgrade facilities for both emerging and elite athletes.
He also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his support and financial commitment to sports development, noting that the Federal Government’s investment of over ₦200 billion in sports infrastructure would provide young Nigerians, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with opportunities to develop their athletic potential.
Olopade stressed that access to world-class facilities was essential to producing athletes capable of winning medals at international competitions, adding that Wike’s initiative deserved recognition.
“The construction of the Gwagwalada Mini Stadium by the FCT Minister is a massive welcome development for the Sports Commission.
“The Minister deserves all the accolades for the good work he has been doing in the FCT, particularly in the area of construction and infrastructure development,” Olopade stated.
The NSC reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders across the country to develop sustainable sports infrastructure, promote grassroots participation, identify emerging talents and strengthen Nigeria’s long-term sporting competitiveness.
