Group applauds FG over N13.87bn pension arrears disbursement to 18,822 retirees

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has commended the Federal Government for disbursing N13.87 billion in pension arrears to 18,822 retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).
The group said the payment would provide relief to the beneficiaries and their families, describing it as another measure by the President Bola Tinubu administration to improve the welfare of retirees.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, TMV said the arrears covered outstanding pension entitlements up to October 2026.
It explained that the payment included arrears arising from the 13.8 per cent and 20.55 per cent pension increases approved by Tinubu, with some entitlements dating back to 2021.
According to the group, the increases, approved by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, covered 22 months, with different arrears periods applying to pensioners of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and five other former federal government agencies.
TMV said the payment was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to address longstanding challenges in pension administration and improve the living conditions of retirees and their dependants.
“We acknowledge that under the Tinubu administration there is a commitment to efficient pension administration, timely payment of entitlements and continuous improvement in the welfare of the pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme,” the group said.
It added that the disbursement demonstrated the government’s commitment to restoring the living standards of pensioners and addressing outstanding obligations to retired workers.
