Abduction of Oyo, Borno schoolchildren dampens Democracy Day, Tinubu says

President Bola Tinubu has said the 2026 Democracy Day celebrations were overshadowed by the continued captivity of schoolchildren abducted in parts of Oyo and Borno States, even as he assured Nigerians of efforts to secure their safe return.

Speaking in his national address marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary, Tinubu said the situation served as a reminder that democracy cannot thrive without security.

“Though this year’s mood is dampened by the abduction of our children in Oyo and Borno, we remain hopeful for their safe return,” the President said.

He added that “democracy without security is a mirage,” noting that his administration had declared a security emergency and approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 police officers alongside thousands of military personnel to strengthen national security.

Tinubu also used the occasion to commend security agencies for their sacrifices in the fight against insecurity, as well as traditional rulers, religious leaders and community stakeholders for their support in promoting peace and reconciliation.

“To our armed forces, police, and intelligence services: Nigeria salutes your sacrifice. To our traditional rulers, faith leaders, and community heads: thank you for your support of peace and reconciliation. The government cannot do it alone,” he said.
