Lagos woos investors to tackle electricity challenges ahead of energy summit

The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to attract more private-sector investment and promote clean energy innovation as part of efforts to address the state’s electricity challenges ahead of the 2026 Lagos Energy Summit.
The summit, scheduled for November 10, will bring together between 1,500 and 2,000 stakeholders across the energy value chain to develop practical solutions for a more reliable and sustainable electricity market. It will be held under the theme, “Lagos Energy Evolution.”
The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, disclosed this at a press conference organised to unveil the summit’s objectives and areas of focus. He said the initiative was designed to move discussions beyond policy declarations to actionable solutions that would improve electricity supply, expand energy access and strengthen the state’s economic competitiveness.
According to Ogunleye, the summit will provide a platform for regulators, electricity distribution companies, power generators, investors, energy suppliers, industry operators, academics, engineers and development partners to examine existing challenges and develop a workable framework for the sector. Commissioners responsible for energy in other states are also expected to participate in the discussions.
He identified energy sufficiency, affordability, accessibility, metering, clean energy development, electric mobility and efficient energy infrastructure as key areas to be examined. The commissioner added that the state’s energy transition must extend beyond electricity generation and distribution to include alternative and cleaner energy sources such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles.
On investment, Ogunleye said the government was engaging private-sector operators to attract partnerships that would expand energy infrastructure and improve service delivery. He stressed that government alone could not deliver the scale of transformation required, adding that sustainable progress depended on collaboration among investors, regulators, industry operators, research institutions and citizens.
The summit will also feature the Lagos State Government’s Clean Energy Initiative, which will give secondary school students an opportunity to showcase innovative projects and practical solutions developed within their schools and communities. Ogunleye described the programme as an investment in the next generation of energy innovators, saying it would encourage creativity and promote interest in clean energy technologies.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ibilola Kasunmu, said the summit was designed to bring stakeholders across the electricity value chain together to identify challenges and develop collective solutions. She urged industry operators and members of the public to register and participate, noting that their contributions would help shape the recommendations and outcomes of the gathering.
