The Academy Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, has suspended academic activities following the suspension of the institution’s Rector, Dr Tajudeen Odetayo.
Governor Ademola Adeleke had on Monday suspended Odetayo over allegations of financial recklessness, corruption, misappropriation of funds and abuse of office.
The governor announced Alabi Kehinde Adeyemi, as the acting rector of the institution.
Adeyemi, was however alleged to be Adeleke’s kinsman.
Protesters gathered at the entrance of the polytechnic as early as 7.30 am on Tuesday carrying placards with different inscriptions to register their displeasure over the suspension of Odetayo.
The union discribed the suspension as an aberration which is against the constitution of the institution.
Chairman of the union, Dr. Fatai Afolabi said his members will embark on the indefinite strike from Tuesday.
In a viral video online, the protesting union members who were chanting solidarity songs in Yoruba, baricaded the main entrance of the institution.
“Governor ti dawa, egbe PDP ti fowa je, awa union deyin leyin won, omi lo ma gbe won lo” (The governor has betrayed us, PDP has disappointed us, we union members are no more supporting them, water will wash them away). the union sang.
