Actress Toyin Alausa warns against rising cyberbullying, social media clout

Nollywood actress Toyin Alausa has expressed concern over the growing issue of cyberbullying and character assassination on social media platforms by clout chasers, warning perpetrators against further acts.

The actress condemned the deliberate tarnishing of people’s reputations in an Instagram post on Friday. She explained that this behaviour is often driven by the need for online relevance and monetization, which leads to cruelty and misjudging others without seeking the truth.

Toyin issued a strong warning to those involved, noting that the hatred they spread would eventually come back to haunt them.

She added that many talented individuals have been victimized, with strangers spreading falsehoods to damage reputations simply because “pain sells and controversy draws traffic.”

“I have watched in silence. I have watched people drag names, tear down reputations, and pour poison into the air, all for clout. All for clicks. All for the desperate hunger for relevance… In this age of social media, tearing someone apart has become a strategy. A strategy. Let that sink in,” she wrote.

She urged victims to remain silent and empowered by their dignity, emphasising that silence is not weakness.

The actress further called on perpetrators to desist from such acts and engage in more worthy pursuits, warning that “hate is an empty house, and one day, you will have to live in it alone.”
