Adeleke may withdraw as PDP suspends 2026 governorship primary in Osun

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, may no longer seek the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for 2026, as the state chapter of the party has suspended its governorship primary scheduled for December 2, 2025, due to the unresolved crisis rocking the party’s national leadership.

Speaking in Osogbo on Monday, the state chairman of the PDP, Hon Sunday Bisi, said the ongoing suspension and counter-suspension of top national officers who are central to the conduct of congresses, primaries, and the transmission of candidates’ names to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had created uncertainty that affected the planned schedule.

Bisi explained that the statutory ad hoc ward and local government congresses slated for November 24 and 29 respectively could not hold, noting that these were the congresses where delegates to the primaries would have been elected.

He added that issues leading to the disruptions were already before various courts across the country, further complicating the party’s ability to proceed with the primary as earlier scheduled.

“In the light of the foregoing, it has become inevitable that the PDP governorship primaries slated for Tuesday, December 2, 2025, can no longer hold,” Bisi said, stressing that Governor Ademola Adeleke remained the sole aspirant duly screened in line with the party’s timetable.

He, however, disclosed that the information available to him indicated that Adeleke might no longer be interested in seeking the PDP nomination for the 2026 Osun governorship election, except a resolution recognised by INEC was reached within the required timeline.

Bisi stated that although the conduct of primaries was the responsibility of the national secretariat, the state leadership found it necessary to update party members and residents of the state in the interest of transparency.

He assured that leaders of the party at both state and national levels were working round the clock to ensure a lawful, workable, and timely resolution to the challenges confronting the PDP.
