AFCON Qualifiers: Super Eagles suffer 3-0 defeat to Guinea Bissau

Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) suffered a major setback on Tuesday as the Super Eagles slumped to a 0-3 defeat to Guinea-Bissau.

Playing before a mammoth home crowd, the Djurtus dominated the Nigerians, scoring once in the first half and twice after the break to maintain their leadership of Group L.

The hosts, who showed greater hunger and determination against a disjointed Super Eagles side, deservedly took the lead in the 15th minute through Franculino Dju, whose left-footed effort caught goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali off guard.

Guinea-Bissau doubled their advantage in the 66th minute through Mama Baldé before sealing a convincing victory with an injury-time goal from Álvaro Djaló.

The defeat was Eric Chelle’s first in open play and his heaviest loss since taking charge of the Super Eagles.

The result leaves Guinea-Bissau with six points at the top of Group L, while Nigeria remain on three points after two matches in the AFCON qualifiers.
