Afenifere rejects tribal tag on Tinubu, backs full two-term presidency

Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to complete a full eight-year, two-term tenure, denouncing claims that his administration is a “Yoruba government.”
In a statement issued on Friday, Abagun Kole Omololu, the group’s national organising secretary, condemned attempts to stoke ethnic sentiments against Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.
He asserted the President emerged through a democratic process supported by Nigerians across ethnic and religious lines, not by tribal entitlement.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government is not a Yoruba government. It is a Nigerian government. He did not ascend to the presidency by tribal inheritance but by democratic choice,” Omololu stated.
Afenifere criticized those trying to sabotage Tinubu’s leadership by labelling it ethnically motivated, calling it “a vile act of tribal opportunism and sedition.”
The group drew comparisons with former President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure, arguing that Buhari was not hindered by similar ethnic rhetoric and was allowed to serve his full term without a “Fulani government” label.
“We reject any suggestion that President Tinubu should be denied a second term on the basis of ethnicity. The same principle of equity that applied to Buhari must apply now,” Afenifere said.
The statement concluded by affirming that Tinubu would serve his constitutionally guaranteed terms “by the will of the Nigerian people and under the watch of the law.”
