Akpabio leads Nigeria’s delegation to IPU Assembly in Tanzania

Senate President Godswill Akpabio is leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) holding in Arusha, Tanzania.

The assembly, which begins on Sunday and runs until October 9, will bring together parliamentarians from across the world to deliberate on good governance, inclusive development and strategies to empower communities.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by EmemMaria Ntedodom, Deputy Director and Head of Information, Press and Public Relations, the general debate at the assembly will focus on the theme, “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.”

The statement said the theme would provide delegates with a platform to “deliberate, exchange views and galvanize parliamentary action” on promoting inclusive governance and creating opportunities for all.

The assembly will also consider resolutions on an emergency item and a subject item on inclusive social development and the empowerment of persons living with disabilities.

The subject item before the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights is titled, “Inclusive social development for all: Parliamentary strategies to promote the rights and empowerment of people living with disabilities.”

Other statutory bodies of the IPU, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and Committee on Middle East Questions, will meet during the assembly.

The Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young Parliamentarians will also hold meetings as part of the programme.
