Akume charges NUPRC, NALDA boards on governance, accountability

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has called on the newly inaugurated boards of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) to uphold accountability, transparency, and effective service delivery in line with the Federal Government’s reform agenda.

Akume gave the charge on Tuesday in Abuja during the separate inauguration ceremonies of both boards, describing the exercise as a key milestone in strengthening governance structures and advancing sectoral reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

At the inauguration of the NUPRC Board, the SGF urged members to maintain high standards of corporate governance, ensure regulatory independence, and work constructively with management and stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector.

He said the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) remained central to repositioning the industry for efficiency, transparency, and investor confidence.

“As the apex governance body of the Commission, you are expected to provide strategic oversight, policy direction, and institutional stability necessary to enhance investor confidence, optimise revenue generation, and promote sustainable development within the upstream sector,” Akume said.

He added: “Members of the Board, your charge is clear. You are to uphold the highest standards of corporate governance, ensure accountability and transparency, and work constructively with management and stakeholders while maintaining regulatory independence.”

The SGF stressed that the appointments were based on competence and integrity, expressing confidence in the board’s ability to support the objectives of the PIA and strengthen institutional performance.

He also linked the inauguration to the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration, noting that strong institutions were essential for economic growth and energy security.
