Alaafin announces free cataract surgeries for 100 residents in Oyo
By Adejayan Gbenga –
His Imperial Majesty, Iku Baba Yeye, the Alaafin and Paramount Ruler of Oyo Kingdom, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has unveiled a humanitarian initiative to sponsor free cataract surgeries for 100 residents of Oyo and neighbouring communities.
According to a statement signed by Bode Durojaiye, Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, the programme is designed to combat preventable blindness and alleviate the financial burden on individuals in need of the procedure.
Registration for the initiative is currently open to the public. Interested persons are advised to register at Shekinah Pharmacy and Stores, Adebimpe Building, near Idi Ope, Oyo Town. The programme will operate on a first-come, first-served basis and will cater exclusively to the first 100 registered beneficiaries.
Cataract, a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, remains one of the leading causes of vision loss in Nigeria. While surgery is an effective treatment, the cost often places it beyond the reach of many, particularly elderly and low-income individuals.
The royal intervention is expected to restore vision to beneficiaries, enhance their quality of life, and enable them to resume normal daily activities.
