The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has reaffirmed his deep respect for the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and all custodians of Yoruba heritage, addressing recent controversy over their public interaction.
The statement comes after an incident at a recent public event where the Alaafin greeted the Ooni while seated—unlike others who stood. The gesture sparked debate online, with some interpreting it as a breach of protocol.
Responding through his Personal Assistant, Kolade Oladele, Oba Owoade described the reactions as a deliberate attempt by bloggers and online commentators to sow discord among Yoruba traditional rulers.
“This latest installment in a series of manufactured debates is an unhelpful distraction,” the statement read. “It diverts attention from the critical issues Yorubaland must confront, including insecurity, economic hardship, and sustainable development.”
Oba Owoade emphasized the need for unity and collaboration among Yoruba leaders, calling on the public to focus on meaningful progress rather than petty controversies.
“At a time when our people face profound socio-economic and security challenges, it is incumbent on all of us—leaders, youths, traditional institutions, and citizens alike—to rise above pettiness and focus on uplifting our communities,” he said.
The Alaafin stressed that traditional rulers should be seen as partners in development, not rivals, reaffirming his commitment to mutual respect and inter-royal cooperation.
“His Imperial Majesty, Iku Baba Yeye, remains unwavering in his dedication to these priorities. He views synergy between traditional institutions as a vital pillar of progress in Yorubaland. He holds the Ooni of Ife—and all custodians of Yoruba heritage—in the highest regard and is deeply committed to working together for unity, justice, and sustainable development across our land,” the statement concluded.
