Amotekun arrests over 30 residents for indiscriminate waste disposal in Osun

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –

The Osun State Amotekun Corps has arrested more than 30 persons for allegedly dumping refuse on roads and in drainage channels across Osogbo and its environs.

In a statement by the corps’ public relations officer, Yusuf Idowu, the arrests were made during an enforcement operation carried out by the corps in collaboration with environmental sanitation authorities.

The operation followed the recent constitution of an Environmental Sanitation Task Force by the Osun State Government under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke, as part of efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal across the state.

The government had warned residents against dumping refuse on roads, streets and drainage channels and directed them to comply with established waste disposal arrangements.

The arrested persons were subsequently handed over to environmental sanitation officers for further investigation and appropriate action in accordance with relevant environmental laws and regulations.

Meanwhile, the corps commander in the state, High Chief Adekunle Omoyele, said the enforcement was necessary to curb the persistent practice of indiscriminate waste disposal.

Omoyele said refuse dumped in drainage channels could obstruct the free flow of water, particularly during the rainy season, while also contributing to damage to roads and creating unhealthy conditions for residents.

He urged residents to cooperate with the government by properly packaging their household waste and handing it over to designated waste collectors instead of disposing of it at unauthorised locations.
