APC accuses PUNCH, Guardian newspapers of misleading reports

…reiterates commitment to democracy and economic reforms

In a recent statement, the All Progressives Congress (APC) sharply criticized The Punch and The Guardian newspapers, accusing them of spreading “misinformation” and undermining Nigeria’s democratic stability.

Issued by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, the statement condemned The Punch for alleged biased reporting on President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms and denounced The Guardian for insinuations of military intervention.

The APC’s remarks follow a controversial editorial by The Punch, which criticized Tinubu’s economic policies, including the removal of petrol subsidies. The party claims this editorial reflects a longstanding pattern of hostility from the publication, noting that its critical stance has continued from the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari into Tinubu’s tenure.

“The media has a responsibility to support democratic principles and provide accurate information,” Morka’s statement read, highlighting the need for responsible journalism amid national challenges.

He emphasized that democracy, while imperfect, remains Nigeria’s most viable path forward, dismissing any call for military intervention as counterproductive and harmful to Nigeria’s progress since the return to civilian rule in 1999.

The APC underscored that military regimes in Nigeria’s history have been marked by economic setbacks, social unrest, and widespread human rights abuses, which they warned should not be repeated. The statement stressed that Nigeria’s focus should remain on strengthening its democratic institutions and addressing issues through peaceful, constructive dialogue.

Defending the administration’s economic strategy, the APC argued that subsidy removal is essential to combating corruption and redirecting funds toward critical sectors that benefit the population. The party noted that The Punch editorial failed to acknowledge Nigeria’s fiscal realities and the supportive measures in place for small businesses and social welfare under Tinubu’s administration.

The APC called on The Punch to retract its editorial and uphold journalistic integrity, urging media organizations to avoid “misleading the public and fostering unnecessary alarm.”

Reaffirming its dedication to democratic governance, the APC reiterated its support for President Tinubu’s vision and pledged to continue working toward a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria.
