APC failed to conduct primary for Ibadan North bye-election — INEC

By Adejayan Gbenga –

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) failed to conduct its primary election ahead of the upcoming bye-election for the Ibadan North Federal Constituency in Oyo State.

This was disclosed in a letter issued by INEC on Wednesday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, detailing the commission’s unsuccessful attempt to monitor the exercise.

INEC said the APC was expected to conduct its primary over the weekend in preparation for the August bye-election, but no election was observed by the commission’s officials.

The bye-election became necessary following the death of Hon. Musliudeen Olaide Akinremi, the APC lawmaker representing the constituency, who passed away last year at the age of 51 while serving his second term.

In a letter dated July 21, 2025, and addressed to the Director of Election and Party Monitoring at INEC Headquarters in Abuja, the Acting Administrative Secretary in Oyo State, Rosemary Alaba Adeniyi, submitted a formal report.

The report, signed by Kehinde Omisile, Acting Head of INEC’s Election and Party Monitoring (EPM) department, noted that the commission had prepared to monitor the primary as indicated in a notification submitted by the APC on July 20, 2025.

“All efforts to monitor the APC primary election, as specified in the letter signed by the State Secretary and submitted on Sunday, July 20, 2025, proved abortive,” the letter read.

As of the time of filing this report, the APC is yet to issue any public response to INEC’s statement.
