Badagry monarchs demand 2027 governorship slot, push Lagos APC for power shift

Traditional rulers from Badagry Division in Lagos State have called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone the state’s governorship seat to the division ahead of the 2027 elections.
The position was presented at a press conference by Dr. Oba Olalekan Sejuro Ogungbe James, who spoke on behalf of royal fathers and stakeholders, describing the demand as a step toward correcting a long-standing political imbalance in the state.
The monarchs said their call is driven by a desire for fairness and equitable participation in governance, noting that Badagry has not produced a governor since Lagos State was created in 1967.

They added that Badagry remains the only one among the five historical divisions—Epe, Ikorodu, Ikeja and Lagos Island—yet to produce a governor in both military and civilian administrations.
Highlighting its importance, the monarchs described Badagry as a historic hub for trade, diplomacy and cultural exchange, as well as a strategic gateway linking Nigeria to neighbouring West African countries.
They argued that the division’s legacy and growing economic potential in tourism, logistics and cross-border commerce justify its inclusion at the highest level of governance in Lagos State.

The traditional rulers also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s role in democratic struggles and ongoing reforms, while reaffirming Badagry’s loyalty to progressive parties and its consistent electoral support over the years.
They stressed that the division has capable leaders, rallied around the “Badagry Lokan” slogan, and urged the APC and other stakeholders to consider zoning the 2027 governorship ticket to Badagry to promote unity and inclusive governance.
