Basketball: Nigeria’s D’Tigress stun China in FIBA U-19 World Cup opener

Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress delivered a stunning performance on Saturday to defeat China 93-88 in their opening game at the FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Switzerland.
The Nigerian team erupted in celebration at the final buzzer, having secured a dramatic and historic victory over one of the tournament’s favorites in Brno.
Nora Ezike was the standout performer, leading the team with 25 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals in what was her debut game for Nigeria.
“I’m so excited. It’s an honor to represent my country and amazing to get this first win,” Ezike said after the game. “The key was sticking to our game plan and never giving up.”
She credited teamwork and discipline for the win, noting that their defense and composure in the final moments made the difference. “We didn’t rush, we kept our cool and stayed together as a team,” she added.
The result evoked memories of D’Tigress’ groundbreaking Olympic run at Paris 2024, where they became the first African women’s basketball team to win two games and reach the quarter-finals.
The victory marks a strong start for Nigeria in Group B and sends a message to other teams in the tournament.
Up next for the Junior D’Tigress is a tough Group B matchup against Canada on Sunday.
