Bolt, inDrive, Uber drivers protest poor working conditions in Lagos, Ogun

Drivers operating on ride-hailing platforms such as Uber, Bolt, and inDrive have commenced a three-day strike across Lagos and Ogun states, protesting poor working conditions and low earnings.

The industrial action, organised by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria, began on Monday, March 16, 2026, and is expected to end on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

The union’s public relations officer, Steven Iwindoye, announced the strike during a news conference in Lagos, citing rising operational costs and declining driver income as key concerns.

According to him, drivers are grappling with high fuel prices, vehicle maintenance costs, inflation, and increasing living expenses, while fare structures on the platforms have not been adjusted to reflect current economic realities.

“Drivers operating on platforms such as Uber, Bolt, inDrive, and Lagride face rising operational costs, including high fuel prices, vehicle maintenance, inflation, and daily living expenses. Unfortunately, fare structures and policies of these companies have not been adjusted to reflect these economic realities. Thousands of drivers now struggle to earn a sustainable income despite working long hours,” Iwindoye said.

He described the strike as a necessary step to demand urgent reforms in the ride-hailing sector, stressing that many drivers now struggle to earn sustainable incomes despite working long hours.

Iwindoye explained that during the strike period, drivers would log off from all ride-hailing platforms, noting that the action is aimed at securing fair treatment, economic sustainability, and improved safety measures for drivers.

He added that the union had presented a list of demands to the companies and relevant authorities, including fare reviews, reduced commission rates, and a regulated minimum base fare, noting that the union would review responses after the strike to decide its next action while apologising to commuters for the inconvenience.
