NSC appoints Lekan Fatodu as president of Nigeria Aquatics Federation
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has appointed Hon. Lekan Fatodu as the president of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation as part of efforts to strengthen governance and accelerate the development of aquatic sports across the country.
The appointment was announced on Friday by the Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who said the decision aligns with the commission’s ongoing reforms aimed at repositioning sports federations through effective leadership, institutional strengthening and enhanced athlete development programmes.
Fatodu, who currently serves as Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), assumes leadership of the federation at a critical period for aquatic sports in Nigeria, with stakeholders seeking improved structures, stronger talent development pathways, enhanced technical capacity and greater international competitiveness.
According to Olopade, the commission remains committed to ensuring that sports federations are led by competent and visionary administrators capable of driving sustainable growth and delivering measurable results across various sporting disciplines.
Reacting to his appointment, Fatodu described the responsibility as a call to national service and an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of another key sector of Nigerian sports.
“This appointment represents an opportunity to build stronger structures for aquatic sports development across the country. Our focus will be on creating pathways that identify talent early, strengthen coaching and technical capacity, improve competition opportunities, and ensure that Nigerian athletes can compete successfully on the continental and global stage,” he said.
He stressed that sustainable sports development requires strong institutions, consistency in policy implementation and collaboration among stakeholders, adding that his administration would prioritise these principles in repositioning aquatic sports for greater success.
