Cape Verde earn brave draw against Uruguay

Cape Verde’s remarkable debut FIFA World Cup campaign continued on Monday as they earned a thrilling 2-2 draw against two-time champions Uruguay in a fiercely contested Group H encounter in Miami.

Having already stunned observers with a goalless draw against Spain in their opening match, the tournament newcomers made another statement by taking the lead against Uruguay in the 21st minute. Kevin Pina struck a superb long-range free-kick that squeezed through the middle of the defensive wall and beyond the goalkeeper.

The goal transformed the flow of the match, encouraging Cape Verde to attack with greater confidence. However, their adventurous approach left gaps at the back, allowing Uruguay more opportunities to exploit space on the counterattack.

Uruguay capitalised on those openings to draw level. Maxi Araujo reacted quickest to head home from close range after defender Sidny Lopes Cabral inadvertently flicked a dangerous delivery back towards his own goal.

The South Americans completed the turnaround in first-half stoppage time. Agustin Canobbio, restored to the starting line-up after missing the opening stages of Uruguay’s draw with Saudi Arabia, finished calmly from close range after being picked out by Araujo.

Cape Verde struggled at times to play through Uruguay’s relentless pressing, with misplaced passes disrupting their attempts to build attacks. Nevertheless, they continued to search for openings and were rewarded midway through the second half.

The equaliser came courtesy of a costly defensive mistake. Uruguay defender Mathias Olivera attempted to play the ball across his own penalty area without noticing Helio Varela lurking nearby. The Cape Verde forward seized possession, rounded the goalkeeper and calmly slotted into an empty net to make it 2-2.

Uruguay thought they had found a late winner when Federico Valverde bundled the ball over the line, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Both teams created further opportunities during stoppage time, but neither could find a decisive third goal. The result leaves Uruguay in second place and Cape Verde in third in Group H, with both sides on two points and still firmly in contention for a place in the last 32.
