Nigeria’s quest for a maiden African Nations Championship (CHAN) trophy has received a boost as CAF announced an increase in prize money for the 2024 tournament.

Winners of the competition, to be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, will earn $3.5 million, marking a 75% increase from the previous amount. CAF also revealed that the total prize pool for the tournament has risen by 32%, now totaling $10.4 million.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe described the CHAN as vital for developing Africa-based football talent, stating: “This competition is part of our strategy to invest in African football and make it more appealing to fans, sponsors, and global stakeholders.”

Nigeria’s closest attempt at winning CHAN was in 2018, when the Super Eagles B team finished as runners-up after losing 0-4 to hosts Morocco in the final. The team also secured a bronze medal in 2014 under the late Stephen Keshi.

Having defeated Ghana’s Black Galaxies 3-1 on aggregate to qualify, the current squad, led by coach Daniel Ogunmodede, resumed camping in Ikenne, Ogun State, to prepare for the competition.

Nigeria joins 16 other nations, including hosts Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, along with Morocco, Senegal, Guinea, and others. Two additional teams will qualify to complete the lineup.

The 2024 CHAN tournament will run from February 1 to 28, 2025.
