Coalition applauds peaceful conduct of Ondo gubernatorial election
…highlights concerns over vote buying
Democracy and Good Governance Watch Initiative, a coalition of civil society organizations, has commended the people of Ondo State for the peaceful conduct of the 2024 gubernatorial election held on Saturday.
In a joint interim statement signed by its conveners—Comrades Nelson Ekujumi, Gbenga Soloki, Ajayi Popoola, Rasak Oladosu, and Rasak Olokoba—the coalition lauded the electorate for their peaceful turnout across all 18 local government areas to elect a new governor for the next four years.
The group praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its exemplary performance in organizing the election, emphasizing that the process reflected the commitment to credible electoral practices.
“As the world eagerly awaits the announcement of the winner, INEC’s handling of the election so far has been commendable,” the statement read.
Security agencies were also commended for their professionalism and commitment, which contributed to the generally peaceful atmosphere during the polls. Additionally, the coalition acknowledged the media and both local and international civil society organizations for adhering to global standards in their election monitoring and reporting.
However, the coalition expressed concerns over isolated incidents of vote-buying reported at some polling units. While these cases were not deemed significant enough to undermine the overall credibility of the election, the group noted that such practices are troubling and need to be addressed as Nigerians strive for electoral processes that can serve as a global benchmark.
The coalition urged the residents of Ondo State to remain peaceful and patient as they await the official declaration of results by INEC. It called on the electoral body to ensure the final outcome reflects the will of the people as expressed at the polls.
“God bless Ondo State. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
The results of the election are expected to be announced in the coming days.
