Customs warns Nigerians against misuse of U.S. visas

By Kunle Sanni –
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a public advisory urging Nigerians to strictly adhere to the conditions of their U.S. entry visas, warning that violations could result in visa revocation and legal consequences.
In a statement released by Abdullahi Maiwada, Assistant Comptroller and National Public Relations Officer, the NCS said the warning follows concerns raised by the United States Government over the misuse of visas by some Nigerian travellers.
“Nigerians are urged to desist from engaging in activities inconsistent with the purpose of their U.S. visa or visa classification,” the statement read.
The NCS emphasized that U.S. visa holders remain subject to ongoing security vetting even after entering the country. Authorities in the U.S. monitor compliance with immigration laws, import/export rules, and other legal standards. Breaches could lead to visa cancellations or further penalties.
The Customs Service also reminded travellers of the legal requirement to declare any amount exceeding $10,000 (or its equivalent) when entering or exiting Nigeria, and to ensure that their baggage does not contain prohibited items.
I’m addition, the agency advised all intending travellers to maintain lawful conduct both within Nigeria and abroad, warning that fraudulent activities in any jurisdiction carry consequences under both Nigerian and U.S. law.
The statement confirmed that the Nigeria Customs Service is working closely with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria continues to meet international standards and to prevent potential visa restrictions that could affect genuine travellers.
“We are committed to ensuring that Nigeria does not get enlisted into an expanded U.S. visa ban,” Dr. Maiwada said.
