Davido, Asa to headline Gateway Games opening ceremony
Top Nigerian music stars Davido and Asa are set to perform at the official opening ceremony of the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2024, in Abeokuta.
Organisers announced that the star-studded ceremony will take place today, Sunday, May 18, at 5 p.m. at the MKO Abiola Stadium in the Ogun State capital, marking the start of what they promise will be a world-class sporting event.
As part of efforts to make this edition one of the most memorable, the organisers have lined up cultural displays and entertainment to highlight Nigeria’s diversity and talent.
The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who also chairs the Main Organising Committee, described the preparations as the most extensive in the festival’s history.
“This is our own Olympics. From start to finish, the festival must reflect that global standard, both in competition and organisation,” Olopade said. “That’s why the NSC and Ogun State Government have put together a world-class event for today’s opening.”
He expressed pride in Ogun State’s readiness, saying: “For two years, I’ve said Ogun would host the best festival, and now it’s clear. From the opening ceremony to the main events, it will be the best Nigeria has seen.”
Olopade also noted that this is the first time the initial days of the National Sports Festival will be without complaints over accommodation and feeding, describing it as a major milestone.
While keeping the full performance lineup under wraps, he revealed: “Asa will open the ceremony, and Davido will close it. I won’t say what’s in between—Nigerians should stay glued to their screens for a ceremony like never before.”
