Defence Minister commends Guards Brigade, highlights cultural unity at WASA 2024

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has commended the Guards Brigade for its steadfast commitment to ensuring the security of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its environs.
Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the 2024 West African Social Activity (WASA) held in Abuja, Matawalle praised the Brigade for its exemplary service in protecting the seat of government.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the ministry’s Director of Information, Henshaw Ogubike, the Minister lauded the Guards Brigade’s loyalty, sacrifice, and efficiency in presidential security, ceremonial parades, and tackling operational challenges.
“Your proactive approach to addressing security threats has ensured the safety of the Presidency, citizens, visitors, and diplomats. I urge you to maintain excellence with compassion and empathy in your operations,” Matawalle said.
The Minister also emphasized the cultural significance of WASA, describing it as a vibrant celebration of Nigeria’s rich heritage. “The traditional dances and local cuisines displayed tonight not only deepen our appreciation for our diverse cultures but also preserve our cultural identity,” he added.
In his welcome address, Major General Adebisi Onosayan, Commander of the Guards Brigade, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support for the Brigade’s operations and welfare.
He also acknowledged the guidance of the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Army Staff.
“We pledge our unwavering loyalty and readiness to contribute to the security of lives and property in the FCT and its surroundings,” General Onosayan said.
General Onosayan highlighted the importance of WASA 2024, noting its role in showcasing Nigeria’s cultural diversity through traditional dances, cuisines, and ethnic expressions.
“This event marks the Grand Finale for the Brigade and reflects the ethos of the Nigerian Army,” he stated.
