Delta Air Lines cancels Lagos flight after aircraft returns to US mid-journey

Passengers travelling from Atlanta to Lagos aboard a Delta Air Lines flight were left stranded after the aircraft returned to the United States several hours into the journey due to what the airline described as an operational issue.

The flight, identified as DL54, departed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Saturday evening en route to Lagos before turning back mid-air after about eight hours of flight.

According to reports, the Airbus A330-200 had maintained its transatlantic route for several hours before the crew decided to return the aircraft to Atlanta over operational concerns.

Delta Air Lines later confirmed that the flight was diverted back to its Atlanta base, although the airline did not disclose the exact nature of the issue that prompted the decision.

Following the aircraft’s return in the early hours of Sunday, the airline officially cancelled the Lagos-bound flight, while the aircraft was grounded for inspection.

The development also affected the scheduled return service from Lagos to Atlanta, as passengers billed to depart Nigeria on Sunday were informed of the cancellation of the outbound flight.

Some affected travellers reportedly complained about inadequate communication from the airline regarding alternative travel arrangements and the timing of the next available flight.

One passenger said he had travelled from Abuja to Lagos for the journey and eventually purchased another ticket on a different airline due to an urgent appointment in the United States.
