Edo’s first female police commissioner assumes duty

Betty Otimenyin has officially assumed duty as the 49th and first female Commissioner of Police in Edo State.
Speaking to journalists after inspecting the guard of honour, Otimenyin pledged to work toward drastically reducing crime in the state.
She emphasized her commitment to addressing gender-based violence and extortion, noting that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, is firmly against such practices.
“We are going to look at gender-based violence, violence against women and children. We are going to work on laws that protect women and children,” she said.
Otimenyin also stated that while the IGP has directed officers not to check individuals’ phones, exceptions would be made in cases requiring investigations.
She enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in 1992 and began her career in the Bauchi State Police Command. Over the years, she served in Plateau, Kebbi, Rivers, and Edo state commands before being redeployed to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Before her appointment as Edo State Commissioner of Police, she was in the Force Intelligence Department (FID) as Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration.
