Eight killed as cement truck crashes in Ondo

By Boye Oyeyemi –

Tragedy struck again in Akungba Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Wednesday evening, as a truck loaded with cement lost control and rammed into a barricade near Adekunle Ajasin University.

The lone accident, which occurred in front of the university gate close to the popular Holy Trinity Church, claimed the lives of eight people: five males, two females, and a male child. No one was injured.

Eyewitnesses said the truck, which was descending the hill, reportedly lost its brake before crashing into the barricade. The impact was said to have caused panic within the university community, as residents and students rushed to the scene.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said, “The trailer was coming from the top of the hill. We couldn’t say if the barricade was opened, because some people said the trailer destroyed the barricade. Like five people have died, while we don’t know how many are under the trailer.”

Security operatives and emergency responders were immediately deployed to the scene to recover the bodies and clear the wreckage.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that eight people lost their lives in the fatal crash, while no injuries were recorded.

According to the agency, the accident involved only one vehicle, a cement-laden truck, and was caused by brake failure and loss of control.
