Ekiti govt seals eatery over poor sanitary conditions

The Ekiti State Government has shut down a popular eatery in Ado Ekiti over alleged environmental and sanitation offences.
The enforcement action was carried out by officials of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources during an inspection exercise in parts of the state capital.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ministry said the operation was aimed at tackling environmental violations linked to persistent offensive odour in some areas of Ado Ekiti.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, said the inspection covered areas around the Federal Polytechnic Satellite Campus Junction and adjoining communities.
She disclosed that preliminary investigations showed the affected eatery allegedly stored waste in an underground septic tank and discharged it into nearby drainage channels at night.
According to the commissioner, the practice contributed to pollution and the unpleasant odour being experienced by residents in the area.
Aluko-Ajisafe added that another eatery was cautioned for operating in unsanitary conditions and directed to comply with environmental health regulations or face sanctions.
She warned residents and business owners against indiscriminate waste disposal, stressing that the government would continue strict enforcement of environmental laws to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment across the state.
