Ekiti LG boss warns residents against open defecation

The Chairman of Ikole LGA, Bayo Omojola, has cautioned residents against open defecation, warning that the practice could trigger disease outbreaks and environmental pollution in the area.
Omojola gave the warning during an interview in Ikole-Ekiti on Sunday, stressing the need for residents to maintain proper hygiene in their surroundings.
He said a clean environment remained essential to the health and wellbeing of both children and adults within the community.
The council boss urged landlords to provide functional toilet facilities in their buildings and ensure tenants had unhindered access to them.
He also advised parents against allowing their children to defecate in drainage channels, bushes and along roadsides across the town.
According to him, poor sanitation and indiscriminate disposal of human waste could expose residents to deadly illnesses, including cholera.
“I want to warn residents to stop defecating openly in the environment in order to prevent outbreaks of diseases such as cholera and other infections linked to poor hygiene,” he said.
Omojola added, “Health officers and local government workers have continued to sensitise landlords on the need to provide toilet facilities for tenants, while the council remains committed to improving healthcare services across the Local Government Area.”
