Expert warns residents against blocking drainage as rainfall intensifies in Ondo

An environmental expert, Alhaji Sule Arekemase, has cautioned residents of Akokoland, Ondo State, against blocking waterways and drainage channels as heavy rainfall continues across the state.

Arekemase said indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage systems could worsen flooding and erosion, particularly in communities already vulnerable to the effects of torrential rainfall.

Speaking in an interview, the environmental expert described flooding as a major threat to lives and property, urging residents to take preventive measures rather than wait for disasters to occur.

“Flooding can be very destructive and deadly. Residents must not wait until disaster strikes before taking necessary precautions,” he said.

Identifying Ikare-Akoko, Oka-Akoko, Akungba-Akoko and Irun-Akoko as communities with higher risk of flooding, he cautioned dwellers to take extreme caution.

He further urged residents to keep drainage channels and waterways free of refuse and other materials capable of obstructing the free flow of water.

In the same vein, the expert advised residents to promptly report environmental hazards to relevant authorities and heed warnings issued by environmental officers in their respective local government areas.

Arekemase called for greater cooperation among residents, traditional and community leaders and government agencies to minimise the effects of flooding and erosion, urging residents to remain vigilant throughout the rainy season.
