FG launches 10-year strategy to revamp livestock sector

The Federal government has unveiled an ambitious 10-year road map to revamp Nigeria’s livestock sector, as the country continues to record signs of macroeconomic stability and growth.

The announcement came during a meeting of the Economic Management Team (EMT), chaired by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, on Thursday in Abuja. The EMT gathered to review economic performance and set priorities for key sectors.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Edun noted that recent indicators reflect a positive economic trajectory, with inflation declining for the fifth consecutive month to 20%, GDP growth holding steady above 3%, and a merchandise trade surplus of ₦7.4 trillion recorded in the second quarter of 2025. These developments, he said, are the result of a competitive exchange rate and disciplined reform efforts by the administration.

A major highlight of the session was the presentation of the National Livestock Growth and Advancement Strategy (NL-GAS) by the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha. The comprehensive, two-phase plan aims to double the national herd size and expand livestock output by at least 100% by 2035.

Designed to foster strong collaboration between the public and private sectors, NL-GAS forms part of the government’s broader agenda to enhance food security, boost rural incomes, and promote private-sector-led economic growth.

Minister Edun praised the strategy, describing it as a critical step toward unlocking investment and long-term sustainability across the agricultural value chain. “Our focus remains on unlocking investment, boosting productivity, and creating sustainable pathways for growth. Initiatives like NL-GAS reflect our commitment to building a resilient and inclusive economy,” he said.

The EMT is expected to continue sector-specific reviews in the coming months, ensuring effective coordination and implementation of national economic priorities.
