The Federal Government has inaugurated a state-of-the-art fashion manufacturing hub in Maiduguri, Borno State, aimed at generating over 48,000 jobs and boosting economic activities in the region.
Vice President Kashim Shettima launched the facility on Tuesday as part of the government’s initiatives to foster innovation, upskill the workforce, and promote equitable wealth distribution. The hub, one of the largest in Nigeria, is equipped with advanced technology to support the fashion industry in the state and beyond.
“Our vision is for this hub to become a reference point for excellence, enterprise, and training—not only for Borno State but for the entire nation,” Shettima said, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to grassroots economic development.
The Vice President also announced N300,000 unconditional grants for outstanding Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) participating in the 6th Expanded National MSME Clinics programme.
“This grant represents yet another fulfillment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to expand opportunities for all Nigerians,” Shettima said.
The N75 billion MSME Intervention Fund, managed by the Bank of Industry, will provide loans of up to N1 million at a 9% interest rate to 75,000 businesses nationwide. Shettima highlighted the crucial role of MSMEs in driving economic growth and reducing poverty.
The Vice President also commissioned a 15MVA injection substation in Maiduguri, constructed by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC). The project aims to enhance electricity supply, reduce energy losses, and boost economic activities in the region.
Speaking at the event, Shettima warned against the growing menace of power infrastructure vandalism, describing it as a “national emergency.” He called on citizens and security agencies to safeguard the nation’s electricity assets to prevent disruptions and economic setbacks.
“The widespread power outages experienced across Northern Nigeria last year due to vandalism serve as a stark reminder of the fragility of our electricity infrastructure,” he said.
The new substation includes 5km of distribution networks and three 500kVA transformers, promising to transform Maiduguri’s power supply, stimulate local industries, and support small businesses.
Shettima also announced the successful completion of the FGN-ALAT Digital Skillnovation Programme in Borno State, which trained over three million Nigerians in digital skills.
The Vice President reaffirmed the administration’s focus on innovation, skills development, and renewable energy, citing the introduction of 100 electric buses and plans to attract more investment into Nigeria’s energy sector.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum praised the initiatives, expressing optimism that they would revive business activities and create jobs for residents affected by years of insurgency.
The Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Sen. John Owen Eno, described the MSME Clinic as a transformative programme unlocking economic opportunities and fostering innovation across Nigeria.
