FG pledges support for responsible online journalism

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a free, responsible, and vibrant press in the digital era, urging online publishers to embrace ethical standards and help combat the spread of fake news and misinformation.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave this assurance in Abuja on Tuesday at the public presentation of “Nigeria Media Renaissance – Perspectives on Online Publishing”, organised by the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).

Commending GOCOP for its leadership and sense of responsibility in driving conversations about the future of journalism, Idris said the publication comes at a time when digital technology and online content are rapidly reshaping Nigeria’s media landscape.

“We need sober reflection and fresh thinking — not just about how news is produced and consumed, but also about the broader implications for our democracy, our society, and our future,” the minister said.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s 26 years of unbroken democratic governance, Idris noted that democracy must translate into tangible benefits for citizens — including improved living standards, better social services, and sustained economic growth. He stressed that the media plays a critical role in nurturing democracy by shaping public discourse, holding leaders accountable, and upholding truth.

The minister described the idea of a media renaissance as timely, calling it a conscious effort to reset the tone, ethics, and values of journalism in the digital age.

“A renaissance means rebirth — it suggests innovation, grounded in reflection. It is not just about doing new things; it is about doing things better,” he said.

Idris raised concern over the dangers of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, warning that false reports can spark violence, damage reputations, and undermine national security within minutes.
