FG temporarily closes Enugu airport for emergency runway repairs

The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, for emergency runway rehabilitation.

According to a statement issued on Friday by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the closure follows the discovery of a sudden and significant rupture on a critical section of the runway.

FAAN said emergency repairs will commence on April 22 and are expected to be completed by May 6, 2025. During this period, the runway will be closed to all flight operations, including landings and takeoffs.

“In compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations, and in line with our commitment to passenger safety and the modernization of airport facilities, the runway will not be open during the rehabilitation period,” the statement read.

The authority appealed to airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation, adding that all flights scheduled for the Enugu airport would be diverted to nearby airports.

FAAN also apologized for the short notice and any inconvenience the closure may cause.

The airport authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safe skies, secure airports, and seamless travel experiences for all passengers.
