Gateway Games: Lagos athletes survive bus accident en route to Abeokuta

Members of the Lagos State contingent traveling to the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State were involved in a bus accident earlier today (Friday), fortunately with no casualties.
Sources revealed that the accident was caused by a minor fault developed by the bus during the trip.
The incident occurred as the team made its way to Abeokuta for the festival, which began on May 16 and is scheduled to run until May 30, 2025.
Emergency services responded promptly, and all athletes and officials were safely evacuated. Medical evaluations confirmed that everyone involved is in stable condition.
Confirming the incident, Olowo Adewale, the general captain of the Lagos State athletes, said, “It’s not something serious. We are grateful to God that the few members of our team who were affected are in stable condition. They’re in the hospital and receiving medical care.”
This year’s edition, dubbed the “Gateway Games,” marks the second time Ogun State is hosting the festival—the first being in 2006.
Originally scheduled for January 2025, the event was postponed to May to allow for better preparation and the implementation of recommendations from the joint technical committee.
The swift emergency response and the resilience of the Lagos team have ensured that the athletes remain in high spirits and ready to compete, despite the unexpected setback.
