Gateway Games: Sports key to unity, progress — Gov Abiodun

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has highlighted the vital role of sports in promoting national development, peace, and unity.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 22nd National Sports Festival, Gateway Games 2024, on Sunday at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, the governor said sports remain one of the most powerful platforms for fostering national cohesion.

“Our national development depends on peaceful coexistence, and sports remain one of the most powerful platforms for fostering national unity,” he stated.

Abiodun assured that his administration, in collaboration with national security agencies, had implemented a robust security framework to ensure the safety of all participants and spectators throughout the event.

“As we mark this turning point in Nigeria’s sporting history, I assure you that the next ten days will dazzle us with unimaginable talent, remarkable performances, record-breaking feats, and the true spirit of sportsmanship,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, state governors, lawmakers, sports administrators, and other key stakeholders who supported the successful hosting of the festival.

Governor Abiodun also noted that the state made adequate preparations to host over 10,000 athletes and officials participating in the national competition.
