Gbajabiamila threatens N10bn lawsuit against Adeyemi over alleged defamation
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has threatened legal action against Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, demanding N10 billion in damages over allegations linking him to corruption, murder and abuse of office.
The demand was contained in a letter dated July 6 and signed by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kemi Pinheiro, on behalf of Pinheiro LP, the legal representatives of the Chief of Staff.
According to the letter, the allegations made by Adeyemi during a recent press conference were false, malicious and defamatory, portraying Gbajabiamila as corrupt, criminally culpable, morally bankrupt and unfit to hold public office.
The legal team rejected claims that the Chief of Staff sought a share of the alleged take-off grant of the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, received money through proxies, abused his office or participated in criminal activities.
Gbajabiamila’s lawyers demanded that Adeyemi, within 72 hours, stop making or publishing further defamatory statements, remove the disputed materials from all platforms under his control and issue a full retraction and apology.
They also requested that the apology be published in at least five national newspapers, across all platforms where the allegations appeared and on every social media account used to circulate them.
The letter warned that failure to comply would result in civil and criminal proceedings, including a N10 billion defamation suit, an injunction restraining further publications and a court order compelling a public retraction and apology.
The dispute followed a June 25 press conference in which Adeyemi accused Gbajabiamila of seeking a share of the alleged take-off funds of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, receiving money through intermediaries, abusing his office and participating in efforts to conceal wrongdoing.
