German finance minister cancels India trip amid Berlin turmoil

German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has cancelled the India leg of his Asia trip scheduled for this week, his ministry said on Monday, citing “current developments” in an emailed statement.
The announcement came after Germany’s Labour Minister, Baerbel Bas, said earlier on Monday that she would step down from her ministerial position and as co-leader of the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) following the death of her stepdaughter.
Bas and Klingbeil are co-leaders of the SPD, which is part of Germany’s governing coalition.
The ministry did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding Klingbeil’s decision to cancel his planned visit to India.
