Government warns against deadly ‘ogogoro mix’ circulating in Akure

By Boye Oyeyemi –

The Ondo State Governor’s Taskforce has issued a public safety alert over the rising circulation of dangerous alcoholic cocktails popularly called “ogogoro mix”, warning that the substances pose severe health risks.

According to the Taskforce, the cocktails are laced with toxic additives, including tramadol, codeine, cannabis extracts and even methylated spirit.

Officials said the mixtures have already resulted in multiple cases of collapse, organ damage and suspected deaths in parts of Akure.

The advisory urged parents, school authorities, youth groups and community leaders to intensify warnings to young people, noting that the products are being sold discreetly in some neighbourhoods.

Residents were also encouraged to report any suspected distribution centres to the nearest police formation or directly to the Governor’s Taskforce to aid enforcement efforts.

The state government said a coordinated security operation is under way to track down illegal sellers and shut down outlets endangering public health.

Taskforce Chairman, SP Oluwapelumi Babafemi Elemide, assured that the team would sustain its crackdown until the illicit trade is dismantled across the capital.
