Governor Mbah targets N600bn IGR to drive Enugu’s development in 2025

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to generating N600 billion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for 2025. He stated that the increased revenue would drive major development projects across the state.

Speaking during his investiture as President of the Enugu Sports Club on Saturday, Mbah emphasized the state’s shift from reliance on federal allocations to a stronger focus on domestic revenue generation. He assured residents that his administration was on track to not only meet but surpass the IGR target.

“When we took over, Enugu’s IGR was about N25 billion. This year, our projection is N600 billion, and based on the trends we are seeing, we will not only achieve this but exceed it. This revenue will enable us to make critical interventions in education, healthcare, and other sectors,” Mbah said.

He also reiterated his administration’s ambition to expand Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion. While acknowledging skepticism about the feasibility of this target, he explained that achieving it requires a 27% annual growth rate, which his government is actively working towards.

Agriculture has been identified as a key driver of this economic expansion. In February, the state partnered with WhiteRabbit Agro Limited to launch a 20-hectare pilot cocoa plantation in Nkanu East Local Government Area, marking a significant step towards large-scale cocoa production and processing.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Patrick Ubru, highlighted that the project partner is cultivating 100,000 high-yielding cocoa varieties sourced from the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN), Ibadan. He described the initiative as an opportunity for residents to invest in agribusiness and contribute to Enugu’s economic growth.

Ubru also outlined plans to expand into large-scale cocoa and palm plantations. He expressed confidence that with continued investment in agriculture and industrialization, the state would surpass its $30 billion GDP target, creating jobs and boosting economic prosperity.

Calling for broader participation, Ubru encouraged individuals, businesses, and multinational corporations to invest in Enugu’s agricultural projects. He stressed that collaboration would accelerate economic growth and ensure sustainable development across the state.
