How mentorship changed my life, by Chichi Eriobu

In 2023, I had the privilege of speaking at the Global Mentorbridge Summit—and I didn’t leave the same way I came.

It wasn’t just another conference. It was a room filled with clarity, honesty, and perspective—a safe space where founders, career professionals, and mentors came together to speak truth into our journeys.

It reminded me of something I sometimes forget in the busyness of building a business:
You don’t grow just by doing—you grow by listening, reflecting, and being guided.

Here are five powerful lessons the Summit reminded me about mentorship:

1. Every founder needs a safe space—not just a big stage.
As a CEO, you’re often expected to have the answers. But in mentorship, you’re allowed to ask the real questions, without judgment. That’s a gift.

2. The right mentor helps you zoom out.
When you’re buried in execution, it’s easy to lose sight of strategy. A mentor helps you step back, breathe, and re-align your vision with your values.

3. Mentorship isn’t always formal, but it should always be intentional.
Not every mentoring relationship comes with a title. It could be someone you follow, someone you serve, or someone who checks in on you. The key is to be deliberate about learning and receiving.

4. You grow faster when you learn from someone else’s journey.
There are two ways to grow: through experience or through exposure. Mentorship gives you access to someone’s scars—so you don’t have to earn your own the hard way every time.

5. A true mentor doesn’t just validate you—they stretch you.
Yes, a mentor will believe in you. But they’ll also challenge your thinking.
They’ll ask hard questions.
They’ll make you uncomfortable—in a way that pushes you forward.

As the 2025 edition of the Global Mentorbridge Summit approaches on July 31, I’m walking in with a deeper appreciation for mentorship—not just as a tool for business growth, but as a lifeline for staying aligned and grounded.

If you’re building anything—a business, a career, a dream—and you’ve been walking alone, this is your nudge:
Mentorship can change your direction.
It can change your pace.
And if you let it, it can change your life.
