‘I never met Abacha’ — Peter Obi denies alleged ties to military regime

By Kunle Sanni –

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has denied claims that he worked with the military regime of the late General Sani Abacha, describing the allegation as false and misleading.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Sunday, Obi gave a brief but firm rebuttal, stating, “I’ve never met Abacha in my life.”

The denial follows recent social media narratives and political commentary suggesting that Obi had ties with the Abacha junta, which ruled Nigeria from 1993 to 1998 and was widely condemned for human rights abuses and large-scale corruption.

There have been claims circulating online suggesting that Obi was involved with the Abacha regime through activities at Tincan Island Port in Lagos.

Obi dismissed these assertions as baseless and politically motivated, urging the public to focus on verifiable facts rather than propaganda.

He reiterated his commitment to transparency and accountability, principles he said guided his tenure as governor and continue to shape his public engagements.
