ICPC clarifies El-Rufai’s detention, denies seeking fresh custody

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has clarified that it did not request a new extension of the detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai.

In a statement signed on Tuesday by John Okor Odey, Head of Media and Public Communication, the commission described recent reports suggesting otherwise as inaccurate and urged the public to rely on official updates.

“The commission appeared in court today for the hearing of Mallam El-Rufai’s application, dated and filed on 6th March 2026, which seeks to overturn the court order renewing his remand issued on 5th March 2026,” the ICPC said. “During the proceedings, counsel to Mr El-Rufai was served with our response, and an adjournment was requested to allow him time to reply. The hearing was therefore adjourned to 31st March 2026.”

The ICPC outlined the timeline of El-Rufai’s detention, noting that an initial 14-day remand was granted to investigate allegations of money laundering and abuse of office. Following the expiry of the initial order, a 14-day extension was granted by the court on 5th March 2026 to complete investigations.

The commission also confirmed that El-Rufai’s earlier attempt to set aside a remand order issued on 19th February 2026 was dismissed on 9th March 2026. He remains in lawful custody under the remand order dated 5th March 2026.

According to the ICPC, all actions taken are in strict compliance with court directives and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015. The Commission emphasised its commitment to professionalism and adherence to the rule of law.

The statement further reiterated the commission’s longstanding policy against media trials, stressing that legal matters should be resolved in court rather than on social media or in newspapers.

The ICPC assured the public that it will continue to provide updates in line with legal processes and called on citizens to avoid spreading unverified information.
